How Much Does Professional Packing Cost in the Twin Cities?
If you’re thinking about hiring professional packers in the Twin Cities and trying to figure out what it’s going to cost, you’re in the right place. Packing service pricing has two parts: labor and materials, and a lot of the total depends on how much of your home you want packed. Based on real service data from hundreds of Keepsake packing jobs across the metro, here’s what professional packing labor actually costs, what materials add on top, and what impacts the final number.
If you’re planning a full move, our partners at College Muscle Movers created this guide to how much movers cost in the Twin Cities.
Quick Answer: How much does professional packing cost?
- Professional packing labor in the Twin Cities typically runs around $65 per packer per hour, with most rates falling between $55 and $77.
- For a full pack, labor cost scales clearly with home size: roughly $400 to $800 for a studio up through $1,400 to $2,100 for a 4+ bedroom house.
- Materials (boxes, tape, paper, bubble wrap) typically add another 10 to 15% on top of labor, so a full pack on a 2-bedroom home runs roughly $750 to $1,500 in total.
- The biggest cost drivers are how much needs to be packed, how many packers are on the job, and how organized your home already is.
What Do Professional Packers Charge Per Hour in the Twin Cities?
Professional packing labor in the Twin Cities typically runs around $65 per packer per hour, with most jobs falling between $55 and $77 per packer per hour. Most packing jobs are staffed by 2 packers, meaning the effective labor rate for a typical job runs between $110 and $154 per hour of packing time. This covers labor only, materials are billed separately, more on that below.
Rates vary based on the scope of the job, how much is being packed, and how many packers are assigned. Budget packing options exist at lower price points, but they often come with trade-offs in care, training, and accountability for your belongings.
Full Pack, Partial Pack, or Unpacking: What’s the Difference?
A full pack covers the entire home, every room, every closet, every drawer you want packed. It’s the right fit when you want packing completely off your plate before a move.
A partial pack covers specific rooms or categories, often the areas people dread most: the kitchen, a home office, a garage, or anything fragile and awkward to box up. Many customers handle the straightforward rooms themselves and bring in professional packers for the rest.
Unpacking works the same way in reverse: getting boxes opened, items placed, and a new home livable faster after a move.
We also offer a Packing Boost, a shorter, targeted session for customers who are mostly packed but need a few hours of extra hands to finish the job.
See our full packing services page for more on what’s included with each option.
Average Professional Packing Costs in the Twin Cities by Home Size
The figures below are based on real Keepsake full-pack jobs across the Twin Cities, mapped to home size using details noted on each job. We cross-checked this against the type of home (apartment vs. house) as a sanity check, and the pattern holds: studio and 1-bedroom jobs are almost entirely apartments, while 3-bedroom-plus jobs are almost entirely houses, which is what you’d expect.
These figures cover labor. Materials (boxes, tape, paper, and bubble wrap) typically add about 10 to 15% on top of the labor cost, see the Materials section below for how that’s calculated. The table includes an estimated total so you can see the full picture at a glance.
Full Pack
| Home Size | Avg. Labor Cost |
|---|---|
| Studio | $400 – $800 |
| 1 Bedroom | $500 – $1,060 |
| 2 Bedroom | $640 – $1,300 |
| 3 Bedroom | $890 – $1,990 |
| 4+ Bedroom | $1,410 – $2,090 |
Cost scales with home size for a straightforward reason: more rooms means more items, which means more time and often a larger crew. The studio and 3-bedroom-plus categories have smaller sample sizes, so treat those ranges as more approximate than the 1 and 2-bedroom figures.
Partial pack jobs cost less than a full pack of the same home, typically running about half to two-thirds of the full-pack price for that size, since you’re paying for specific rooms rather than the whole home. Unpacking and Packing Boost sessions are generally shorter, targeted visits and tend to cost less than either full or partial packing, scaled to how much help you need.
What Affects the Cost of Professional Packing?
A few factors determine where your job lands in the cost range.
Home size. As shown above, this is the clearest driver of cost, more rooms means more to pack.
How much you own. Within a given home size, this is the next biggest factor. Two homes of the same size can take very different amounts of time to pack depending on how much is actually in them.
How organized things already are. A closet that’s already sorted packs faster than one that needs decisions made item by item. Packers can move quickly through organized spaces and more slowly through genuinely chaotic ones.
Number of packers. Most jobs are staffed with 2 packers, though larger full-pack jobs may use 3 or more. More packers means a faster job, but a similar total cost for the same amount of work.
Fragile and specialty items. Dishware, artwork, electronics, and other delicate items take more time and more careful materials to pack properly. If you know your home has a lot of this, it’s worth mentioning when you request a quote.
Scope: full pack vs. partial pack. As covered above, packing your whole home costs more than packing specific rooms, simply because there’s more to do.
Materials: The Other Part of Your Total Cost
The figures above cover labor. Packing materials, boxes, tape, paper, and bubble wrap, are usually billed separately and added to your total. Based on our own job data, materials typically run about 10 to 15% of the labor cost, which is where the total column above comes from. When you request a quote, we include an estimated materials cost alongside the labor estimate, so you see both numbers upfront rather than being surprised later. The actual materials charge depends on what your home needs: a one-bedroom apartment uses far fewer boxes than a four-bedroom house, and a home with a lot of fragile items needs more protective material than one that doesn’t.
You don’t need to source or supply anything yourself, we bring everything required. It’s simply priced as its own line item rather than folded into the hourly labor rate, which is why your total quote has two parts: labor and materials.
We don’t charge extra labor for fragile or awkward items. If something needs careful handling, that’s part of the job itself, not a surprise labor fee at the end. The additional protective material it requires shows up in the materials estimate, the same as any other supply.
Tips to Keep Your Packing Costs Down
A few things you can do to get the most value from professional packing:
- Declutter before you book. You want your packing time going toward your belongings, not your clutter. Fewer items means less time packing and fewer boxes to move. Our guide to decluttering before moving has a room-by-room approach to get started.
- Be specific when you request a quote. Tell us about fragile collections, a home office full of electronics, or anything else that needs extra care. Accurate information upfront means a more accurate estimate.
- Get the cleaning and laundry done first. To really make the most of your packing time, make sure all items are ready to be packed. Before your packers arrive, finish the laundry, wash and dry the dishes, and dust the books, china, and art so everything can be wrapped and boxed right away.
- Consider a partial pack. If you’re comfortable boxing up your own clothes and books, booking professional packers just for the kitchen and fragile items can meaningfully lower your total cost.
